In their first season ever in 1970, Conval had a lot to shout about en route to a 10-2-2 record. Celebrating one of many goals were (from left): Tod Silegy, Steve Hartwell, Mike Walker and Tom Lithgow.
This week in Conval history was a week of dramatic firsts.
On September 9, 1970, the Cougars dedicated their home soccer field (now the JV/practice field) with a tense 2-1 victory over Milford. And it didn’t take long for the historic first goal, either.
“Historians will record that Mike Fontaine, a freshman, was the first Conval Cougar to score, and the first ever to boot in a goal in a regulation interscholastic game in the new Contoocook Valley Senior High net,” wrote the Peterborough Transcript.
Mike’s goal came in the first two minutes of the game.
Conval played just the way everyone was hoping they would. With Fontaine’s goal at the 1:34 mark, “Conval cheerleaders, dressed in bright gold blouses and blue skirts, with Cougar buttons attached, set off with even more enthusiastic cheering.”
Milford tied the score in the third period, and in a tense final minutes, Terry Jarest laced in the game winner with 13 minutes left in regulation. The Milford goalkeeper was sensational throughout, keeping the Cougars at bay—38 shots on goal and 19 saves—but the Spartans never threatened the rest of the way as the Cougars dominated play in their first-ever home game.
Conval finished the 1970 regular season 10-2-2 before falling to Wilton in a physical playoff match held in Temple.
